Brainspotting and Athletic Performance

Brainspotting is an amazing type of therapy that allows the sports counselor and the athlete client to locate, focus, process and release experiences and symptoms that may be out of reach of the conscious mind. Brainspotting can been very effective in freeing athletes of performance (mental) blocks as well as encouraging peak performance. Brainspotting can result in physical healing and pain reduction as well as providing freedom from emotional suffering.

Athletes often suffer from the snowballing effects of traumas throughout their lives caused by injuries, humiliating experiences, poor performance, parental pressures to outperform, abusive coaches, etc. These traumas can reach critical mass and become debilitating resulting in limited performance. Trauma memories are usually stored in the unconscious mind and in our bodies. They cannot always be addressed through more conventional therapy methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).

Signs you may need to seek Mental Performance Counseling:

Nervousness before games
Fears about being judged by peers or the coach if you do not perform to their expectation
Perfectionism – overly focused on mistakes
Physical symptoms of anxiety, such as muscle tension, breathing changes, increased heart rate, stomach aches or trouble concentrating, irritability, etc.
Self-doubt
Negative self-talk
Difficulty focusing during meets or meets
Better performance in practice than in games or meets
